There is nothing like getting outside, into the great outdoors and exploring the wilderness. Whether you like walking the dog, hiking in the mountains, skiing, mountain biking or rock climbing the opportunity to take some exercise is always more enjoyable when the weather is nice. Sometimes though you can’t partake in your sport of choice so what better way to pass the time than to watch others partake in these viral videos. Some or big budget by major sports brands others are done on a camcorder.
Walk on Water (Liquid Mountaineering)
This mockumentary has had over 11m views and follows the simple premise of a group of guys learning how to walk on water. The video is convincingly low budget and appears to be a true story (and judging by some of the comments has convinced many). In reality this is a very clever spoof which has generated several copy-cat films by fans trying to replicate the feat and also a making of video. The film was commissioned by UK hiking boot company Hi-tec.
Blind Fold Cricket with Kevin Pietersen
The England cricketer Kevin Pietersen shows off his incredible skills in this seemingly low budget viral. Kevin takes guard on a cricket pitch in a park whilst a friend loads up the bowling machine and KP knocks the balls for six. Theres a catch, he’s blindfolded! Incredible skill and judgement or a hoax? Very clever and except for the broken window in my kitchen!
A hunter shoots a bear
This video starts with a rather daft looking hunter complete with deerstalker hat brushing his teeth and soon a bear arrives and the chap raises his gun and is about to shoot the bear before he has a change of heart and says “I don’t want to shoot the bear” Then you get the choice as to whether the bear should be shot or not. Somehow Tippex have managed to create a set of Youtube videos where you can add a choice for the hunter such as ask him to “kiss the bear” and multiple videos follow the choice the hunter makes. Very clever and 20 million people agree. Make sure you take a tippex pen when you go camping
David Beckham manages three balls in three bins over 50 meters away on a beach
This viral has been doing the rounds recently and has Beckham on a hot sunny beach barefoot. In the distance are three rubbish bins and he is challenged to get the ball into the bin. Beckham gets passed three balls and says easy! Three of Beckham’s special bending kicks later and the balls are in the bins. Simple, clever and effective advertising for Pepsi who’s can is in Beckham’s hand.
Roger Federer hitting a bottle off a man’s head.
This video has been debated loads as to whether it is genuine and how they have pulled off the trick. Federer, is hanging out on a film set and is chatting away with the crew and then gives himself the challenge of being a tennis equivalent to William Tell.
Genuine or spoof whichever way you look at it I wouldn’t have wanted to be the chap with the bottle on his head!
The key to a great viral is to create a discussion as to whether the film is genuine or a spoof. If the film looks genuine as many of these do then they are spread virally via emails and social networks. An element of awe is important as that feeling of disbelief is where the interest is created. In order to do this the product placement and advertising is kept to the minimum to allow the feature to seem natural.
