Keywords

The first step to optimizing your site for search engines is to research your keywords. The important part is finding out what words your viewers would actually use when searching for what you offer, and it’s not always what you would expect.

Targeting the wrong words are a waste of online advertising effort, dollars, and time; and can hurt your brand in the long run, because the people who need what you offer may never find you.

Make sure to choose the obvious broad keywords that apply to your content, but don’t leave out the more specific words and phrases that you might type in to a Google search to get exactly what you are looking for.

Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool will help you research keywords by showing you what search engines see when they pull up your site, which will help you fill in any gaps.

Permalinks

Next you’ll want to change your permalink structure, so that search engines are more likely to find your relevant posts. Permalinks (URLs) need to make sense to people and search engines alike.

By default, your permalinks for the different pages of your website probably look something like http://domainname.com/?p=123, which isn’t particularly descriptive. It is much easier for search engines to find your posts if the permalinks are more akin to http://domainname.com/post-title-here/ because the most important part of the algorithm search engines use is the filename.

To customize your permalink structure in WordPress, you’ll go to settings on your dashboard, and select permalinks. There is a radio button next to “Custom Structure.” Click on it, and type in: /%postname%/, and then click, “Save Changes.”

Titles

Now its time to use all those keywords you researched! Search engines use the title of your pages to find them, but the title isn’t what you enter into the “title” box when prompted.

The real page title is contained in the <title> tag in the source code. The page description that the search engines will use and the keywords are contained in META tags, also in the source code, as so <meta name=”description” content=”put, in, all, your, keywords, and key phrases, separated, by, commas” />

WordPress does all this automatically, but perhaps not in the most optimized way possible, depending on your site content. There is an awesome WordPress plug-in named All in One SEO, which will help you edit the code to better suit your content.

Density

You’ll also want to check out the keyword density in your content. Where appropriate, use bold or italics to highlight keywords, because search engines see these words as being important, but don’t go overboard, since your posts should still be pleasing to the human eye.

Google sees anything more than 5% keyword density as “stuffing” your post with keywords, instead of having quality content, and will treat your page as junk. In a 500 word post, a 5% density of any keyword would be 25 times, and that’s a lot to use just one word without winding up with junk.

To calculate your keyword density by hand, use a word count tool such as the one in Microsoft Word, and then count how many times your keyword appears. Divide that number by the total number of words, and there you go. Somewhere between 1-4% is usually sufficient.

User Friendly Navigation

Make sure to examine your site for ease of navigation! Easy site navigation is really important because people will stay on your site longer to see all your great content if it’s easy to find and access! You should create permanent links to important posts and areas of your site so that they are easy to find. Make sure to take advantage of the ability to create categories, use your most important keywords as your categories, and be sure they are plainly visible on your site.

Tag Clouds

A tag cloud in the sidebar is another way to help visitors really get into your content. The advantage to a tag cloud is the more often a keyword is used, the larger the word appears in the cloud. You can also use a plug-in called Related Posts to add a list of similar posts at the end of each of your posts. If a reader likes the post they just read, they are pretty likely to click over to read similar posts, and that means more time on your site!

Network and backlink

A really easy way to drive traffic to your site is to read other people’s blogs and websites, and to make relevant comments. When you comment on someone else’s post, you’ll be asked for your name, email, and url. If you make intelligent, on topic comments, people will click through, and see your site too. Encouraging comments on your own blog posts is beneficial as well; because it lets you know there are people out there seeing your content.

These tips will help you optimize your site for better exposure from search engines, which is great for your blog or business; and you don’t have to be a code-monkey to make your site SEO-friendly or manage it effectively.
