Your future career is a big decision. There are so many different occupations that you can choose from and it can often be hard to narrow it down. College can help you figure out exactly what you love to do and decide what major to go into. Although you may find your dream career very quickly, you should always have a backup career in case your original plan does not work out. It’s great to know exactly what you want to do in life, but you should always have another plan ready to go. Here are the reasons why it is crucial to have a backup plan.
You may not like your original idea
I went into college 100% sure that I was going to be a doctor. I picked Physiological and Developmental Biology as my major. Ever since I was six years old, I wanted to be a pediatrician, but after my first semester in college, I realized that it was not the career for me. I did not have a back up plan and I found myself scrambling to find a major I liked. This happens to a lot of college students and they often change their major seven or eight times. Before you go to college, find multiple things that you are good at and that you like to do. That way, you can change your major if you find out you don’t like your original career plan.
You may not be good at the first plan
Besides the fact that you may not like your first choice, you may realize that you aren’t good at it. I found out that I was not good at science. I liked the idea of working in a hospital and working with people, but I had no skills in science. You may think that you will be good at anything you try, but in reality, you need to discover a few things that you’re good at so you always have options.
You may get rejected
Some colleges have open majors which means that anyone can be in a major and they don’t have to worry about prerequisites. However, many colleges have closed majors where a person has to apply and then get accepted in order to be in a program. If the program is especially arduous, creative, or specialized, a person usually has to apply to get in. If you have your heart set on one of these specialized majors where you have to submit an application, you need to have a backup major. If you do not get accepted, you will be back at square one with no idea what you want to do.
Unemployment rate is high
Another reason to have a backup plan is because of this country’s economy today. We tend to blame a lot of things on the economy. The important thing to remember is that unemployment rates are higher today than they have been in a long time. You don’t want to graduate from college and step out into the real world without a job. Make sure you have a solid backup plan for your career so that you don’t have to go through a lot of trouble when you graduate.
